The Morse Code

This is a handmade workbook for use by students transitioning from print to cursive handwriting. An independent child can finish the workbook without too much adult guidance, just the occasional check to be sure the letters are formed correctly at the introduction of each new letter. This was a proven winner.

This spelling curriculum is part of a series for fourth through sixth grade Montessori students. Its intention is to increase the child's phonemic awareness. Instead of weekly word lists, this method uses a real-world passage that children then analyze for its component graphemes. Children can play with words and their graphemes, thus leading to awareness of the graphemes' phonemes. This material is a collection of cards with a simple moral scenario printed on each card. It asks the child "what would you do?" and is suitable for use as writing prompts or for group discussion. These scenarios are designed to get children to think about kindness and empathy.
