How to Train Your Dragon: Vocabulary

I was the English Coordinator at a UK school and I developed many guided reading resources and class novel resources for Key Stage Two (ages 7-11). This particular resource for How to Train Your Dragon has a focus on vocabulary. It was a class novel for Year Four (ages 8-9) at the school and we had a student with very limited vocabulary therefore I wanted to have a vocabulary support sheet for her. This contains: -guided reading record sheets according the (old) AF levels -challenging vocabular

The Indian in the Cupboard: Vocabulary

I was the English Coordinator at a UK school and I developed many guided reading resources and class novel resources for Key Stage Two. I have included the guided reading record sheet I use (not entirely mine as I found this somewhere and made some changes). I went through each chapter and picked out vocabulary I thought was tricky for this novel, The Indian in the Cupboard. The vocabulary per chapter in the record sheet is not in abc order because it’s in the order that it comes up in the chapt

Artemis Fowl: Vocabulary

I was the English Coordinator at a British school and I created guided reading resources/class novel resources for KS2 (ages 7-11) as I noticed this was missing from the school. I went through each chapter and picked out vocabulary I thought was tricky for this novel, Artemis Fowl. The vocabulary per chapter in the record sheet is not in abc order because it’s in the order that it comes up in the chapter. At the end of the document I arranged the vocabulary per chapter in abc order. I copy thes

Experience

20 years of varied teaching experience, including: international education (US, AU and UK), literacy intervention, 11 Plus test prep, English Language Schools and freelance tuition.

Teaching style

I believe organization is key! I am firm but loving and strive to meet children where they are at (differentiation is a must). I believe in learning through play and guiding pupils to explore for themselves. I believe independent practice should be completed into notebooks .....never meaningless worksheets that end up in the garbage hours later. I am a big kid at heart and enjoy pouring enthusiasm into my lessons.

Awards & shining teacher moments

I will never forget my parent teacher conferences at the English language school I worked at in Melbourne, Australia. My families were refugees and immigrants, many who came from horrific experiences. That said the English I taught their children was a gift and would be the key to their future. Their gratitude was the most humbling and rewarding experience I've had.

My own education history

Bachelor in Elementary Education (2002) Reading Endorsement (2009) Masters in Curriculum (2011)
