These book projects can be part of a language arts or social studies curriculum. Get rid of the traditional book reports and do something fun with media and technology. The students will read historical fiction and create one of six projects. The idea behind these projects is to get the students to connect with the characters and create empathy and awareness of what people have endured over time. The book does not matter, as long as the student is able to connect with at least one character.

This project is a fun way to build the understanding of why some civilizations fail and why some succeed. This scaffolding builds on the idea that we learn history to keep from repeating it. The students work in cooperative groups and are required to think critically and be creative to read the text and generate notes, create their civilization based on the six characteristics of a civilization and build a virtual or physical model.
