CHALLENGE: Discover the relationship between a boat’s ability to float and the density of the surrounding water. Students will build two different boats and determine the density of the water based on the boats' ability to float. Can be used for advanced middle school.

Writing Lab Reports is part of ELA! This cross-curriculum lesson offers a different (and fun) view on writing. It comes with a PowerPoint presentation to use throughout the experiment, task cards for groups, student instructions and lab notes, sample lab reports, as well as the Teacher Instructions (from Discover Education). My students loved it because it got them out of their seat, making ice cream, and using science in English class.

Writing Lab Reports is ELA! This lesson plan is for a 90 minute class period using CCSS. Students will be in groups completing a small experiment (making ice cream). The students will then use their knowledge to write a formal lab report.
