Simple History of Chocolate - Timeline Activity

This is a simple activity where students place eight events in the history of chocolate, from Ancient Mayan and Aztec drink to the invention of milk chocolate in Switzerland. They place the events in the history of chocolate (cut-out squares with snippets of information - from an A5 sheet) onto an A3 sized timeline. Then are able to draw their own Illustrations and add more details. There is also an A4 sheet for the students to add any other details they found interesting in the history of ch

The Grade 1 Maths outcomes from the Australian Curriculum are sorted into learning areas and graphically displayed to show a logical teaching sequence. The aim would be to use this arrangement to plan for units so no learning outcomes are missed. This is an adapted version of my earlier Maths Scope and Sequence - Australian Curriculum for Grade 2 but, because there are 4 categories not explicitly covered in grade 1 (Multiplication and Division, Area, Mass and Transformation) there is more Addit

The Grade 2 Maths outcomes from the Australian Curriculum are sorted into learning areas and graphically displayed to show a logical teaching sequence. The aim would be to use this arrangement to plan for units so no learning outcomes are missed. This Scope and Sequence has outcomes arranged both by the Australian Curriculum Content Strands and also re-arranged to show my timeline to ensure that all outcomes are met over an academic year. The sequence also takes into account where content req

This simple assessment will help gauge if students can order the months of the year correctly, and if they can create and enter information onto a calendar, and read a calendar. Can see which students are performing above expected level by recalling or working out the days of months. (I always use the knuckles method with my students - they repeat the names of the months as they tap their knuckles or the gap between knuckles. The months on the knuckles have 31 days.) I have used this with my

An A3 size word document (docx) with all the Australian Curriculum Content Standards displayed in a table. The standards are grouped so that at a glance you can see last years expectations, and next years, for the same content area. (for this purpose year seven standards are included for use by year six teachers)

Students create questions about Australian Rules Football (AFL) football teams. After designing their question, they ask their class mates and collect the answers in a tally. This information is then draw onto a bar/column graph. I use this activity near the Grand Final on our Footy Colours Day at school. I've also created a Prometheam Interactive White Board flipchart to go with this. (Will need AvtivInspire software, or some way to import into your own IWB product) This activity links in

These labels are designed to be a simple classroom display that visually link the month to its season. Each of the months has seasonal images and is printed on coloured card to correspond with its month. There are two sets of labels - one for the Northern Hemisphere (i.e. North America) and another for the Southern Hemisphere.

Multiplication using a Chocolate Block - Printable BLM

The students are chocolate block designers, employed to create a range of new sizes for chocolate company. The activity shows uses arrays to represent multiplication and how to record the rows and columns to show multiplication facts. As they complete each task, the next one becomes more challenging and requires greater creativity. I would suggest that the first four A4 pages be photocopies to make a double sided A3 sheet that can be folded into a booklet. The final page is a sheet of "choco

Students colour, cut and past hour and minute hands to "quarter past" and "quarter to" times. I've used school day activities, but students can also chose to describe and match times of other activity they enjoy, such as television shows.

Teaching style

Students should have rich tasks that are fun and link their learning to solving everyday problems. Their learning should be challenging and deep. Not just simple methods to get "right answers" but to develop them as thinkers, able to solve problems in preparation for life-long learning.
