Common Core: Order of Operations Puzzle! Math Puzzle for Grades 6 and up

Order of Operations Puzzle meets Common Core Standards. This puzzle will give your students practice with simplifying numeric expressions, while problem solving too. This puzzle is designed for students in Grades 6 and up (depending on level). I have used this as an individual, partner, cooperative team activity. Students like the challenge of determining the correct answer (it is self checking) and of creating the final triangle. This puzzle directly addresses both the Common Core Standards for

This activity allows students to learn the difference between credit and debit cards. It is designed to be done in small groups between 3-5 students. Teams learn how to calculate interest, and how companies like Best Buy use interest to make money off of credit purchases. Students gain an understanding of interest, and the real cost of products purchased on credit. The second activity has students compare credit cards. I use real card offers that have been sent to me in the mail for the students

This activity teaches students about profit. It is designed to be done in small groups of 3-5, and I use it as a math station. The activity is simple, the students are running a lemonade stand that sells two types of lemonade. They use a spinner to determine their daily sale. (Mine use a paperclip on the provided spinner) Students are then introduced to the idea of COST to make the lemonade and PROFIT. My students complete this activity in about 30 minutes. (the idea of percentage of profit is

About the store

Experience

I have been teaching math and coding/robotics for 35 years, and still love it! I cannot imagine doing anything else, and thrive in the "new age" of math with the implementation of the Common Core.

Teaching style

I run a student centered classroom. Students are always in teams, and experience a variety of different activities each day. I like to give my students activities that spark their natural curiosity, and let them have success at what they are doing.

My own education history

Clear Single Subject Credential-Mathematics with supplement in Sociology University of California Santa Barbara 1990 Master of Arts, Education University of California Santa Barbara 1989 Bachelors of Arts, Mathematics University of California Santa Barbara 1988 Bachelors of Arts Black Studies University of California Santa Barbara 1988

Additional biographical information

I have had the honor to teach junior high school math for the past 23 years, and to have taught high school math for 12 before that. My passion is helping kids and colleagues find their own love of mathematics.
