This English and Spanish activity is perfect for using math in real world experiences. Ideally kids go grocery shopping with an adult and record what they buy, then show their math! If students cannot physically go to the story, I allow them to make up some items and the prices. They have to add decimals (I will differentiate to whole numbers if kids aren't able to add decimals yet), then find the change from their $50 budget.
The students go on a three day trip to London! All students must select authentic items from a menu that includes transportation, food, hospitality and activities. Then, they will keep track of how much money they have spent and how much money remains for the following days of their trip. This worksheet has a menu of actual tourist destinations in London and tables for students to fill out what they have chosen to do on their trip. It requires addition and subtraction.
