As a German teacher for over 20 years, and as someone with a lifelong passion for the German language and culture, I have learned that doing varied word activities like the ones I’ve designed and shared with you in this book can help increase your knowledge of vocabulary and grammatical terms. By doing word searches and crossword puzzles in the manner that I’ve designed, where the English term is given and you must find or write the German word, you are being challenged to recall and give infor
This is my complete unit on teaching the Family Members auf Deutsch. I take some "creative license" to teach them, using sentences beginner students can more easily comprehend like "Meine Mutters Mutter ist meine ____". If you don't mind teaching in that kind of that way, then I know you will find my lesson fun and effective....my students sure do and it's worked for 20 years! Enjoy.

In my class, my students look forward to the word or phrase of the day. This is an opportunity to teach a fun or interesting word that doesn't normally fit in any vocabulary lesson you will teach throughout the year. There are a total of 185 words that include everything from Albtraum to Zahnpasta. Feel free to use the list in the order I give you or jump around. I include fall, winter and Christmas-themed words. I also include those fun words that exist in German but not in English like Schade

This Google Form is the unit test I designed to go along with my entire unit. Following my vocabulary lesson and many activities I've also uploaded here, I give this as the final test. Students must show knowledge of the classroom objects and colors. In class, we practice verbally with me asking every day "Was ist das?" as I point to various objects. In the beginning they answer with the correct definite article, then after several days and a quick lesson, we transition to them answering with th
In this activity, students are combining their knowledge of classroom objects (see my vocabulary list slideshow) with their knowledge of colors. It's fun, it's interactive and it's not that hard! If you aren't sure if you've taught the same classroom objects that are in this activity, consider downloading my vocabulary list (which is really cute) or purchasing my bundle for the entire unit (vocab list, activities, and assessments)

In my class, I like to do something that I call "Farbefreitag". On (some) Fridays, the kids get to color. Of course, they don't realize they are doing actual work, but they beg for "Farbefreitag"! This packet is designed for you to print out to distribute to kids. Let them have fun coloring in the classroom objects. Then, the real work is where they complete the assigned writing activity. It will help reinforce their knowledge of some classroom objects and their genders. This is designed to go a

This test is designed the same as the previously uploaded worksheet of mine. To repeat what I said there, I use an English sentence structure to help students understand and learn the German words for all the family members. I see nothing wrong with this. In my 20-year experience teaching German, introducing the Accusative or Dative too early on, can confuse some students still struggling with the Nominative and learning the right article for various nouns, this is especially the "case" with the
I'll be honest, sometimes I let my students make certain grammatical errors that aren't "important" or necessary to know better, at that point in their German studies. For example, in German 1, before students learn about Accusative, Dative, etc, I allow them to not change the articles of direct objects, or objects of some prepositions that come up early on. Once I teach them about direct objects, prepositions, indirect objects, etc, I don't confuse them with the other cases. That being said....
In this slideshow, that I have titled "Deutsche Geografie" I teach the names of the bordering countries in German, the names of the 16 states auf Deutsch, the 2 seas which border Germany, and the capitals of the 16 states and the 5 German-speaking countries. As you teach students these states please share your own knowledge about some things that make each state famous. I have an entire unit developed around this lesson, so please consider purchasing the bundle, where I have all the activities a
