These close reads provide individual breakdowns for each chapter in The Joy Luck Club. They focus on character development, quote analysis, cultural context, theme breakdowns, and comprehension. In my World Literature course, I have students complete a year long Cultural Studies project. They pick a country/region with which they are not familiar and research it to better understand a different perspective. They have to then write a ten page research paper focusing on aspects of what they have learned. This poetry analysis is a two day activity of reading, discussion, analysis, and comparison. It looks at "Still I Rise" by Maya Angelou, and "If We Must Die" by Claude McKay.
