They have to then write a ten page research paper focusing on aspects of what they have learned. I usually complete this paper with juniors and seniors, but it can completely be adapted for different age and grade levels; the ultimate message--of learning about perspectives other tha

When we went remote and asynchronous in the spring of 2020, I had to quickly find lots of outside, online resources to add to the resources I already had for Americanah. This was mainly because I knew that we would not be able to have the same level of discussion about the novel that we would have had in class. This packet is a collection of the resources I compiled, as well as explanations of and discussion questions for each resource. And though these resource questions are specifically geare

At the beginning of my Intro to Journalism course, we talk about the history of the field. One cool resource to do that with is the Google News Archives, which has archived thousands of publications dating back hundreds of years. You can see articles as they were they day they were published. It's a much more modern take on what we would have used microfilm for. I have students research three of those publications and find articles of interest to them. We then use that to fuel discussion of wha

When I used to do socratic seminars, I often would write the questions for my students. I'd have them write notes for the questions in advance and then come to the seminar with those notes. But I found that the conversation from that became predictable and too guided, so I decided to switch it up by having the students write the questions. However, students often don't know how to develop thoughtful questions yet, so this lesson is meant to help them do just that. I use these slides the day bef

Teaching style

I am passionate about what I do and try to bring that passion into the classroom. I really want students to be engaged and challenged, but most of all, I want them to step outside their box and comfort zone. I value diversity and I try to act as I preach and bring diversity into the classroom--through literature, through learning styles, and through my approach. I want students to see perspectives beyond theirs and to learn empathy through the stories of others.

My own education history

My parents were in the Army, so I moved around a lot as a kid, which meant moving schools pretty often. It's hard to stay consistent in your learning when you don't go to the same school for more than two years at most. But, luckily, I found a love of learning through reading. I attended East Carolina University for undergraduate and graduate school. I have a BS in English Education and a MA in English. I have a license for 7-12 ELA, as well as a license as a Gifted and Talented Specialist.
