The last will and testament is a tradition for many seniors during the prom season. Seniors fill out the template and leave behind a talent or skill to a junior classman which is then read out loud at prom. Students love being creative and finding unique "gifts" to pass down to their younger friends. Prom is one of the last events of their high school years, make it memorable!
These instructions help students understand what a discussion board initial post and peer reply should look like (especialy peer replies!). Student discussion boards are typical of many college courses. Students should learn how to meet those writing expectations in high school. Discussion boards can be assigned in any course. This document is in gray and black type to save on colored ink. There are three pages that can be displayed and discussed at different stages of the discussion board proc
The Project Life Portfolio is a collection of narrative writing "chapters" documenting a student's life from childhood through high school. The packet is 34 pages and used to help students draft their chapters before typing them out. I like to have my senior English students work on this portfolio near the end of the first semester; however, the project is perfect for end-of-year reflection activities and for varying art classes that incorporate photography or drawing/painting. The portfolio pro
As a high-school English teacher, I needed a quick way to grade essays! I created this rubric for myself, and then I converted it to a Google Form. Students (and myself) like to see percentages instead of 1-5 of a typical rubric. I can then quickly average the percentages together for an overall grade. I teach the students to do the same after they have used it to self-grade their own papers before final submissions. Simply write a percentage inside the different areas. After revision stations,

When you're teaching a high school hybrid course, it's hard to keep up with student/parent virtual communication as you continue trying to teach the traditional students. Managing virtual students can be a nightmare if you don't have proper contacts or basic expectations. Every school has different standards and rules for their virtual students, but basic instructor needs remain the same: We need to get a hold of guardians! The first page of the product is a quick checklist of basic expectations
Many schools have their local radio stations record seniors and broadcast their interviews on the station during the weeks leading up to graduation. Nervous students began asking me to give them examples and let them write out responses so they can take with them to their interviews. While every school is different, our local radio station comes to the school and seniors line up in one long line to record their responses in assembly-line fashion. Whether your local station comes to your school o

Experience
I teach college composition and literature, AP Literature, 12th grade English, Pre-AP English, Creative Writing, and Mythology.
Teaching style
For the last two years, I have been shifting more of my curriculum to digital content to keep my older students engaged. Many students choose to take online courses when they reach 12th grade, and I have been moving more and more of my content online to help with flexibility needs with my older students who choose to stay in the classroom. This helps students transition into college where online discussion boards and submissions are expected.
My own education history
I hold a B.A. in Creative Writing with a minor in History. I also hold an M.A. in Teaching, and an M.A. in English with T.E.S.L.
Additional biographical information
I work at a rural school. Many of my students work, pay their own bills, and care for other family members. It has been hard finding resources for this grade-level. I hope to help others who struggle to find a balance between student needs and academic standards.
