About the store
Our mission is to level the playing field for special education students by providing them access to curriculum standards. Visual Curriculums was born out of the need to help our son maintain passing grades so he could maintain his status in an inclusion classroom. Our son with autism entered elementary school in an inclusion classroom. Everything went well until the third grade when most of the visual teaching supports are replaced with text-based teaching materials and he began to fail all subjects with the exception of math. He, like many other children with autism has vision (ocular motor) problems. Due to his ocular motor issues, our Applied Behavioral Analysis Therapists used visual stories to teach him different concepts, language, and behaviors very successfully. It was natural for us to come to the conclusion that translating his elementary school lessons into visual stories or presentations would be critical for him to maintain his status in an inclusion class. When his third grade general education teacher, TA, and special education teacher, saw what we were creating behind the scenes to keep our son's grades above passing, they encouraged us to create these materials for all students with autism and not just our son. After years of analyzing curriculum standards, working with ABA therapists, a developmental optometrist, vision therapists, teachers, and illustrators to perfect our presentations, we are pleased to offer these lessons and flashcards to anyone who has situation in which a child may benefit from a visual education tool that has proven to be an integral part of our son’s education.

Teaching style

We take standard 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th, and 8th grade science and social studies (and a few English and Math) unit information and convert it into visualized lessons or study guides. We use pictures, drawings, and diagrams as much as possible to reduce the amount of text. Our lessons and flashcards are designed for children with autism, but they work great for anyone who just learns better visually. Neurotypical children have great success with our products as well.
