Math Task Cards

4th Grade (beginning of 5th)

10 Task Cards for 4th Grade Math: 4.NF.3

___________________________________________________

Included in Packet:

1 set of B/W Task Cards and 1 Set in Color

1 Student Response Sheet (2 up) in B/W

1 Answer Sheet in B/W and 1 in Color

_____________________________________________________

I use these Task Cards as an informal assessment after teaching the Standard. I printed out 3 copies for each of my 3 tables. Students numbered their journals 1-10. Each table shared 10 Task Cards. They worked independently on each problem. One student might be working on #8 and another would be working on #10. They might look on each other’s paper, but they still had to show their work.

********Note about Common Core Standards and these Task Cards: Students who can generate equivalent fractions can develop strategies for adding fractions with unlike denominators in general. But addition and subtraction with unlike denominators in general is not a requirement at this grade.

_______________________________________________________

These Task Cards could also be used as a pre-assessment with buddies so students could talk about each problem and how they would work it out. Since I printed out so many copies, I printed the black and white. I did take a Sharpie and colored in the letters and cute graphics to make it a little more colorful before laminating the cards. I will use these again at the end of the year when I do a review of each Standard. I left one blank in case you would want to add a problem. This is quick and doesn’t take a lot of time, but you can see which students need help. There is an Answer Key for quick checks and a Student Response Sheet.

5th grade teachers can use these cards at the beginning of the year to check for student understanding.

Common Core Aligned

CCSS.Math.Content.4.NF.B.3 Understand a fraction a/b with a > 1 as a sum of fractions 1/b.

CCSS.Math.Content.4.NF.B.3a Understand addition and subtraction of fractions as joining and separating parts referring to the same whole.

CCSS.Math.Content.4.NF.B.3b Decompose a fraction into a sum of fractions with the same denominator in more than one way, recording each decomposition by an equation. Justify decompositions, e.g., by using a visual fraction model. Examples: 3/8 = 1/8 + 1/8 + 1/8 ; 3/8 = 1/8 + 2/8 ; 2 1/8 = 1 + 1 + 1/8 = 8/8 + 8/8 + 1/8.

CCSS.Math.Content.4.NF.B.3c Add and subtract mixed numbers with like denominators, e.g., by replacing each mixed number with an equivalent fraction, and/or by using properties of operations and the relationship between addition and subtraction.

CCSS.Math.Content.4.NF.B.3d Solve word problems involving addition and subtraction of fractions referring to the same whole and having like denominators, e.g., by using visual fraction models and equations to represent the problem.
