This puzzle aligns with the Fifth Grade Math Common Core Standards for Numbers and Operations. The following standard is covered:

CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.5.NF.A.1 - Add and subtract fractions with unlike denominators (including mixed numbers) by replacing given fractions with equivalent fractions in such a way as to produce an equivalent sum or difference of fractions with like denominators

The puzzle includes subtracting fractions and mixed number problems in the form of a 4 x 4 grid. Students must match up the original subtracting fractions problem with its simplified answer to correctly complete it. Inductive reasoning and critical thinking skills will also be developed by the students as some of the answers are the same for different questions, but the puzzle will only work out one way.

Add and subtract fractions with unlike denominators (including mixed numbers) by replacing given fractions with equivalent fractions in such a way as to produce an equivalent sum or difference of fractions with like denominators. For example, 2/3 + 5/4 = 8/12 + 15/12 = 23/12. (In general, 𝘢/𝘣 + 𝘤/𝘥 = (𝘢𝘥 + 𝘣𝘤)/𝘣𝘥.)
