Math is best learned in real life situations. This project puts students into the real life situation of balancing a checkbook, paying bills on a set budget and determining the importance of certain luxuries, as well as saving for unexpected emergencies. While working on problem solving and creative thinking, students also work on division, addition, subtraction and estimation. A simple grading rubric has been built in to give students guidance and feedback. Working as individuals, or as groups, this project is sure to get students' minds working.
This project is available in a printable version and a Google Classroom version. The Google Classroom Version includes a Google Slides project sheet, a Google Sheets checkbook register and Google Forms to give students their salaries, their bills and their surprises.
