NOTE: This product is also available in a bundled product called Biology Labs: 15 Must Do Labs for a Biology Class .
INTRODUCTION:
The compounds your body needs for energy and building materials are carbohydrates, proteins, fats, vitamins, and minerals. These compounds are present in the plants and animals you use as food. Simple chemical tests with substances called indicators can be conducted to determine the presence of these organic compounds. A color change of an indicator is usually a positive test for the presence of an organic compound.
PURPOSE:
1. To learn the chemical tests for certain organic molecules including sugars, starches, proteins, lipids, vitamin C and salt.
2. To perform tests on known solutions of organic compounds to learn the positive tests for these organic compounds.
3. To test several different foods of unknown composition to determine what organic compounds they contain.
Students will test different foods for the presence of sugars, starch, proteins, fats, salt, and vitamin C. Your download will include Title, Purpose, Introduction, Materials, Safety Precautions, Procedure, Analysis Questions, Student Data Pages, Answers to all Questions, and Teacher Preparation Notes.
You can choose to have students write their own lab report, or you can use the included student data sheets.
I have included two different versions of this lab in this download. One is slight more complex than the other. Which I use depends upon the ability levels of my students from year to year. For each lab you will also receive a pdf version and a Word document so that you can make changes if you wish.
MATERIALS: Test tubes, Test tube racks, Glucose solution, Starch solution, Protein solution, Fat or oil, Iodine, Benedict's solution, Biuret solution, Brown paper, Hot water bath, Vitamin C solution, Indophenol, NaCl solution, Silver nitrate, a variety of foods.
