This macromolecules lab allows students to test foods for organic compounds, including sugars, starches, proteins, lipids, and vitamin C. This biochemistry lab activity gives students hands-on practice identifying organic compounds in foods using indicator tests and proper lab procedures.

What types of macromolecules and organic compounds are contained in the foods we eat? In this engaging two-part lab, students first learn the indicator tests for sugars, starches, proteins, fats, and vitamin C using known solutions. Once they understand how each test works, they apply their knowledge to test a variety of foods to determine which macromolecules are present.

This lab is perfect for your biochemistry or macromolecules unit in grades 9 to 12. It helps reinforce key content while also giving students meaningful practice with lab procedures and scientific thinking. Instead of passive review, students are actively testing, observing, and analyzing results.

This activity is easy to implement and flexible for your classroom. You can use it as a full lab experience or break it into smaller sections depending on your schedule. The structure allows students to stay focused and engaged while building confidence with lab skills and data analysis.

PURPOSE OF THE LAB:

  • To learn the chemical tests used to identify organic molecules including sugars, starches, proteins, lipids, and vitamin C.

MATERIALS LIST:

Test tubes, Test tube racks, Glucose solution, Starch solution, Protein solution, Fat or oil, Iodine, Benedict's solution, Biuret solution, Brown paper, Hot water bath, Vitamin C solution, Indophenol, NaCl solution, Silver nitrate, a variety of foods.

My students enjoyed this activity after learning about the structure and function of the organic molecules. The real world application was eye opening for some. They enjoyed being "real" scientists as they worked with indicators and test tubes. Although I did not use the tests for vitamin C and salt, it was interesting to see the procedure. Exactly what I was looking for.
