Description of Winter Math Story Problem Rhyming Book Resource:

There are 7 different versions of this book within one product. The story is the same for every version but the numbers change so your students can all work on the same story but solve with numbers that are at their level! The table of contents identifies the pages for each version, as well as the key for keeping track of the pages in each version. All versions of the book include one measurement estimation problem (2.MD.A.3) In addition, the following skills are included:

  1. Version 1: adding and subtracting within 10 (K.OA.A.2)
  2. Version 2: adding and subtracting within 20 (1.OA.A.1, 1.OA.C.6)
  3. Version 3: adding and subtracting within 30 (1.OA.A.1, 1.OA.C.6, 2.OA.B.2)
  4. Version 4: adding and subtracting within 50 (no regrouping) (2.OA.A.1, 2.OA.B.2)
  5. Version 5: adding and subtracting within 50 (with regrouping) (2.OA.A.1, 2.OA.B.2)
  6. Version 6: adding and subtracting within 100 (no regrouping) (2.OA.A.1, 2.OA.B.2)
  7. Version 7: adding and subtracting within 100 (with regrouping (2.OA.A.1, 2.OA.B.2).

Because it is differentiated you can use this book in a variety of different ways. Some of my suggestions include:

  • Small Group Instruction—scaffolding students through solving each problem. You can use it with all levels of your small group and each level can use a different version of the book. Students need explicit instruction in how to solve math story problems and this is the perfect tool for doing that!
  • Problem of the Day—start off your math block whole group by reading one page of the story. Each student has his/her own leveled book based on the math skills that he/she is focusing on, then then he/she solves the problem on that page for the day.
  • Purposeful Practice—in first and second grade when this book may be at an independent reading level for students, have them work through the problems in this book independently during purposeful practice.
  • Math Centers-Use this book as a math center choice. Students can solve the problems independently or with a partner and compare their strategies.

Resources open as ZIP files and includes a printable (PDF) version (and the story problem resources include a digital (Power Point) version of the resource).

I hope your students enjoy these engaging, rigorous and festive Winter Math Resources!
