Description
These 36 task cards give your beginner-level adult ESL students focused practice with possessive adjectives through four different question types. They'll work through identifying possessive adjectives, choosing the correct one based on context, converting subject pronouns to possessive form, and filling in blanks.
You want this because you know possessive adjectives are a foundational skill your beginners need to master. They'll use possessive adjectives constantly in everyday communication, and these cards give them some of that repetition they need to make it automatic.
WHAT'S INSIDE this 22-page PDF:
✅ 36 task cards in color
✅ Same 36 task cards in black and white
✅ Teacher pages
✅ Answer sheet and answer key
✅ Easel digital version for paperless practice
FOUR QUESTION TYPES
- identify the possessive adjective: Students pick it out from sentences that also include subject pronouns and object pronouns, so they have to actually think.
- choose the correct possessive adjective: Context clues in the sentence point them toward the right answer.
- convert the subject pronoun: Students take the given subject pronoun and make it possessive to complete the sentence.
- fill in the blank: No hints, just context. Students supply the appropriate possessive adjective.
HOW TO USE THIS:
Print the version you want, color or black and white. Use these cards as classwork, homework, partner practice, small group rotations, early finisher activities, exit tickets, or build them into a game or competition...whatever fits your lesson flow. Give students the answer key when they're done so they can check their own work. They're adults, right?
The Easel version works for digital learners, students who need extra practice outside class, or those days when you need to shift online fast. Two of the question types are self-checking, so students get immediate feedback on those. You'll need to review the other two question types, but hey, no waiting for the copy machine.
THIS WAS CREATED FOR YOUR ADULT ESL STUDENTS
I originally made this for a mixed-level class that had low-beginners and intermediate students working together. The vocabulary resonates with higher-level students while the question types stay accessible for lower-level learners.
The sentences reflect adult life...work, relationships, responsibilities...not playground scenarios. Your students are analyzing real-world language they'll use outside the classroom.
This also works well for secondary students who need age-appropriate content that respects their intelligence.
