Description

These 36 task cards give adult ESL grammar students focused, varied practice with possessive nouns, which is one of those concepts that seems simple until students suddenly have to use it and the apostrophes start going sideways.

Possessive nouns show up everywhere: in reading passages, in conversations, in writing assignments, in listening exercises. Students who haven’t had enough practice with them trip over the forms, and most ESL materials just don’t give this topic the dedicated attention it needs. These cards help fix that.

WHAT’S INSIDE this 36-card set:

✅ 36 task cards in color and black-and-white format

✅ answer sheet & answer key

✅ teacher pages

✅ Easel by TpT digital version (perfect for paperless classes or students who want extra practice on their own)

FOUR QUESTION TYPES

  • choose the correct possessive noun: Select the right possessive form to complete the sentence. Context clues help guide the choice.

  • rewrite the wordy phrase: Take an awkward, roundabout phrase and replace it with a clean possessive noun.

  • fill in the blank: Write the possessive form of a given name to complete the sentence correctly.

  • make it true: Use real-life information to create an original possessive noun. Students practice the form while making it personally meaningful.

HOW TO USE THIS TASK CARD SET:

Use the cards in a task card rotation, at stations, or as a whole-class activity.  Really, it’s up to you once this set is in your task card library.  ^_^   Students work through all four question types, so they’re approaching possessive nouns from multiple angles.

The answer sheet keeps things organized, and the answer key means checking their work takes almost no time on your end. It also makes handing this task card activity to a sub easier, or you could even let your students check their own work.

Need to go digital in a hurry? The Easel version has you covered. It’s also a good option for students who want to keep practicing outside of class, and when you’re teaching adults, that absolutely happens.

THIS WAS CREATED FOR YOUR ADULT ESL STUDENTS

The sentences were written with adult students in mind.

Mature secondary students will also find the content engaging. It’s not designed for younger students, but nothing about it is off-limits for them.

This set works well for beginner-level adult ESL classes and is a solid fit for mixed-level groups where some students need to solidify foundational grammar before moving on.

GRAB IT AND GO

Print and cut the cards, and you’re ready. Or skip the printing entirely and assign the Easel version.
