SAVE $5 by purchasing these projects as a bundle!

Your students always want to know when they are going to use math in the real world! They also love dreaming about what they will be when they grow up! This project is a great combination of these two ideas! Students get to choose a career path and see how that job uses math

This project bundle is perfect for third and fourth grade students working on math application skills. It includes single step and multi-step problems. It also shows each domain area in a variety of different contexts (i.e. number lines, bar models, fraction tiles, circle models, area models, array models, area/perimeter models, pictographs and more)! It is recommended to use this once students have already learned the basic concepts in the domain.. It works great as an end-of-unit project for third grade for beginning-of-unit fraction review project for fourth grade for each domain!

In this project, students choose the job that sounds most interesting to them and then they complete the project on the pages designated for that career choice. The career choices in all three bundles include: doctor/nurse, architect/builder, delivery driver, chef, baker, musician, scientist, detective, server, firefighter, small business owner and photographer. Each job includes 7 pages of fun and engaging math application practice. Each version of the project includes 32 pages for each level (a total of 96 pages for each level or 288 pages total including both levels) A description of the pages for each career is listed below:

  • One page of story problems of possible math application situations for that job
  • A one-page extended story problem task
  • A two-page math task about a scenario someone with that job might encounter
  • A two-page math task where the student is put into the role of that job
  • A fun page where students get to take ownership of the career choice and create/design something related to their job choice

This project works great for independent practice, small groups, a distance learning project, an end-of-unit project, an early finisher option and more! At the end you can have a “career fair” where students can showcase their work in that particular career!

A description of each project included is below:

Version 1: Multiplication/Division Project careers include doctor/nurse, architect/builder, delivery driver & chef, and is aligned to standards 3.OA.A.3, 3.OA.A.4, 3.OA.B.6, 3.OA.D.8, 3.NBT.A.3, 4.OA.A.3, 3.MD.C.7, 3.MD.D.8.

This project is differentiated and includes two versions so students at all levels of multiplication and division practice can be engaged in this purposeful practice!

  • Level One includes multiplication and division within 100, with mostly single-step story problems and some two-step story problems.
  • Level Two includes multiplication and division within 144 (with a few challenge problems that go beyond the basic facts) with some single-step story problems and many multi-step story problems.

Version 2: Fraction Project careers include baker, musician, scientist & detective and the project is aligned to standards 3.NF.A.1, 3.NF.A.2, 3.NF.A.3 and 4.NF.A.2.

This project is differentiated and includes two versions so students at all levels of fraction practice can be engaged in this purposeful practice!

  • Level One: Includes fractions with denominators of halves, fourths, eights, thirds and sixths. Includes unit fractions and non-unit fractions but all comparisons are either comparing to benchmark fractions like ½ or are “friendly comparisons” across the same denominator or like denominators.
  • Level Two: Includes fractions with denominators of halves, fourths, eights, thirds, sixths and twelfths. Includes unit and non-unit fractions and comparisons are still friendly but go across denominators (4.NF.A.2). More multi-step problems included.

Version 3: Measurement/Geometry Project careers include server, firefighter, small business owner and photographer and the project is aligned to standards 3.MD.A.1, 3.MD.B.3, 3.MD.D.8, 3.G.A.1 (and 3.G.A.3 in the Tennessee State Standards for Mathematics).

This project is differentiated and includes two versions so students at all levels of measurement/geometry application practice can be engaged in this purposeful practice!

  • Level One: Elapsed time problems with start unknown, end unknown and difference unknown with “friendly” times and single-step problems. Single-step geometry identification problems and single-step area/perimeter problems. Pictographs included with some two-step problems.
  • Level Two: Elapsed time problems with start unknown, end unknown and difference unknown with times to the minute and less “friendly” times, jumping over the hour etc. with some multi-step problems. Single and Multi-Step geometry identification problems, some open ended and area/perimeter problems with composite figures. Pictographs included with two-step problems and more challenging pictographs.

There is also a digital version included for all projects which is compatible with Google Classroom, so this is a great option for distance learning!

You can also choose to have students try the projects using all four career choices and decide at the end which one they liked the best! All together this project includes 30 pages of engaging fraction application practice.

Resource opens as a ZIP file. A paper PDF version is included AND a Digital Version of the project is included. Students can use Microsoft Power Point to access the digital version OR Google. Students can easily enter their answers into the easy-to-use "type your answer here" boxes and save their work as a PDF to submit to their teacher! OR You can also upload the Power Point to Google Slides to have students submit their work on Google.

I hope you enjoy these fun and engaging math projects!

Tell and write time to the nearest minute and measure time intervals in minutes. Solve word problems involving addition and subtraction of time intervals in minutes, e.g., by representing the problem on a number line diagram.
Draw a scaled picture graph and a scaled bar graph to represent a data set with several categories. Solve one- and two-step “how many more” and “how many less” problems using information presented in scaled bar graphs. For example, draw a bar graph in which each square in the bar graph might represent 5 pets.
