Description

These Google Slides math lessons demonstrate how place value works by explaining our base ten number system with visuals. The lessons provide real life examples and concrete modeling to build conceptual understanding. They include up to 6 digit numbers (hundred thousands place), making them perfect for fourth grade (CCSS).

Lesson 1:

  • introduces students to place value with a real world example involving money
  • explains the names of each place in a six digit number (ones, tens, hundreds, thousands, ten thousands, hundred thousands)
  • explains that the place of a digit in a number determines its value and using visuals to demonstrate this
  • includes 12 practice problems (just click to reveal the correct answers) with access to a free printable worksheet (page 4).

Lesson 2:

  • reviews the names places and value of digits in a number and explains that, each time you move up a place, the digit is worth 10 times more
  • uses apples to model how 10 ones can be bundled into a ten, 10 tens into a hundred, etc. to build bigger and bigger numbers all based on ten
  • introduces base ten blocks and how they can be used to represent numbers
  • includes 5 practice problems in which students build numbers using base ten blocks (just click to reveal the answers)

I am a Math interventionist at a school and used this resource with my 4th grade math students to review with them place value after they had learned it in their classroom. It was perfect!
