Description

*6 days worth of number strings geared to the third grade subtraction skills. Number Strings are research-based Number Talks that have shown to improve number sense and mathematical fluency. This resource can be used as a tier 1 daily routine or as intervention for older students. I have used this resource in grades 2-6 to improve number sense and operational accuracy. Can be used with other number sense routines to further enhance number sense!

This can be a short unit OR used as intervention in small groups with students who lack operational number sense. Kids often learn the standard algorithm and then forget to think about what they are doing!

Subtract a three-digit number from a four-digit number, with renaming from tens to ones, hundreds to tens, and thousands to hundreds

Fluently add and subtract multi-digit whole numbers using the standard algorithm.
Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them. Mathematically proficient students start by explaining to themselves the meaning of a problem and looking for entry points to its solution. They analyze givens, constraints, relationships, and goals. They make conjectures about the form and meaning of the solution and plan a solution pathway rather than simply jumping into a solution attempt. They consider analogous problems, and try special cases and simpler forms of the original problem in order to gain insight into its solution. They monitor and evaluate their progress and change course if necessary. Older students might, depending on the context of the problem, transform algebraic expressions or change the viewing window on their graphing calculator to get the information they need.
