Are you using Engage NY math? Here are some great task cards for you. I have written the task cards for 5th grade Module 3. There are 36 task cards. These are aligned to SBAC and use the Smarter Balanced Item Specs. There are 4 skills related to addition, subtraction and making equivalent fractions on the Smarter Balanced test and I have written cards to cover all 4 skills.

You will get great data and information about which of your kids need a little more help in learning about fractions. An answer key is provided.

Not sure how to use task cards? There are several great articles on the internet. Search, “ways to use task cards”.

The file is a Word document and you are free to edit and make necessary changes to teach your precious children. You could also make multiple versions if you wish.

Add and subtract fractions with unlike denominators (including mixed numbers) by replacing given fractions with equivalent fractions in such a way as to produce an equivalent sum or difference of fractions with like denominators. For example, 2/3 + 5/4 = 8/12 + 15/12 = 23/12. (In general, 𝘢/𝘣 + 𝘤/𝘥 = (𝘢𝘥 + 𝘣𝘤)/𝘣𝘥.)

Solve word problems involving addition and subtraction of fractions referring to the same whole, including cases of unlike denominators, e.g., by using visual fraction models or equations to represent the problem. Use benchmark fractions and number sense of fractions to estimate mentally and assess the reasonableness of answers. For example, recognize an incorrect result 2/5 + 1/2 = 3/7, by observing that 3/7 < 1/2.
