Description

Who says you can't play with your food? Practice addition skills with 3 or more addends with this fun hands on food themed math station activity. Students work to build "sandwiches" by adding 3 numbered food items (lettuce, cheese, ham, tomato, bread) together.

One of the best ways to get Kindergarten and 1st grade students excited about learning is through purposeful play! I love having my kids play "restaurant" while practicing addition skills and even store materials in a lunchbox or sandwich container. After they build their sandwiches, they can write the combinations (3 addends) on the recording sheet and add to find the sums.

This addition activity can easily be differentiated to meet your needs by changing the numbers used, and how many addends students combine.

This Adding 3 Numbers Activity includes:

✅ Colorful sandwich parts ready to print (1-10 on each food item with blank bread)

✅ Ink saving blackline masters are included to print on colored paper

✅ Recording sheet

✅ Teacher & student direction pages

✅ 2 Bonus "Adding 3 Numbers" worksheets

Standards

to see state-specific standards (only available in the US).
Solve word problems that call for addition of three whole numbers whose sum is less than or equal to 20, e.g., by using objects, drawings, and equations with a symbol for the unknown number to represent the problem.
Add and subtract within 20, demonstrating fluency for addition and subtraction within 10. Use strategies such as counting on; making ten (e.g., 8 + 6 = 8 + 2 + 4 = 10 + 4 = 14); decomposing a number leading to a ten (e.g., 13 - 4 = 13 - 3 - 1 = 10 - 1 = 9); using the relationship between addition and subtraction (e.g., knowing that 8 + 4 = 12, one knows 12 - 8 = 4); and creating equivalent but easier or known sums (e.g., adding 6 + 7 by creating the known equivalent 6 + 6 + 1 = 12 + 1 = 13).
