Description
Introduce or review adding decimals with this engaging, note-taking format!
What is a math wheel? A math wheel is a type of graphic organizer where students can:
- Take notes inside the math wheel
- Use color, drawing, and doodling to help create memory triggers
- Complete practice problems in the pattern around the wheel, and
- Color the background pattern
Students can keep these graphic organizers in their interactive notebooks all year as a resource/study tool. The wheels are excellent to review concepts as part of your test prep!
- You can even enlarge the math wheels and use them as posters or anchor charts.
Each section of the Adding Decimals Wheel outlines a step of the process:
1) Estimate (I always have students estimate first)
2) Line up decimals and place values
3) Add/annex zeros
4) Add
5) Compare answer to estimate
This resource includes:
1) THREE versions of the student wheel
- ‘Open’ for students to write notes (this version is most flexible, allowing you to phrase the notes as you’d like and use additional examples if you want to)
- ‘Fill-in’ notes, to help control student use of space; since much of the wheel includes learning how to line up the problems, this version gives an addition sign and lines to write the number on (with gaps for the decimal points in some cases)
- Pre-filled notes; answers to examples and practice problems are NOT on this version; again ‘spacing guidance’ is provided in some sections
⭐️Each version has two formats: with background pattern and without background pattern.
2) Teacher key with completed notes and examples
3) Colored sample of wheel
4) PowerPoint file with two editable wheel templates ~ you can add text to make your own math wheels, if you’d like (for classroom use only - not commercial use).
Features of this easy-to-use resource:
1) Notes and examples (notes are suggestions, and you can alter them or use additional examples if you’d like)
2) Guided practice or individual practice: 8 problems in the pattern around the circle
3) Coloring/doodling opportunity: students can color the background pattern, as well as the headings and doodle arrows
Coloring the background, if you use patterned versions:
- Students don’t HAVE to color at all during instructional time….coloring the background could be an ‘early finisher’ activity, center activity, homework, etc.
- Students don’t need to color every section of the background – part of their coloring pattern could be to leave sections white.
- Students could color sections with patterns instead of solids – maybe polka dots in one section and squiggly lines in another.
- This coloring part is just a chance to be creative and enjoy the stress-relief coloring can provide:-)
