This the first step to learn letter size and spacing. A student can make legible letters but if they are the same size and smashed together writing can be illegible. Any font can be used.
I tell my students that short letters go in the pink block. Tall letters go in the blue and pink block with most of the letter in the pink block. Dive letters go in the pink block with a foot in the water but not the whole leg.

Great for handwriting!
Perfect for my 2nd grader with dysgraphia, as well as a PreK just learning to write. When printing, adjust the scale to quickly make the boxes larger or smaller. Works great in a dry-erase pouch and placed on an easel or wall.
