Description

Bring your class together whether they're near or far! You can engage your whole class with this collaborative and fun activity while they learn from home, or together at school! What will the mystery mosaic be? Students do the math to find out!

Watch the full 5 minute walk-through video to see the digital version in action, how to share it with students, and what teacher-powers you have.

MATH DETAILS

  • Students use SohCahToa (basic trigonometric ratios: sin, cos, tan) to solve for sides and angles

INCLUDED:

  • Two Google Sheet versions: 25-Sheet and 15-Sheet mosaics to accommodate your class size. (The 'save a copy' links are on the first page.)
  • The Paper Mosaic versions for both sizes matches their digital version's questions (same answer key).
  • .pdf and editable .docx file formats (in zip folder)

GOOGLE VERSION DETAILS:

  • Great for distance learning
  • The mosaic is a single shared Google Sheets file (easy organization; no emailing or handing in work)
  • Every student has a unique set of problems. Copying is not an option!
  • The 15-Sheet mosaic has different problems from the 25-Sheet version.
  • Instant feedback for the student: "Correct", "Almost", "Try Again" upon submitting an answer
  • Easy assessment for you! Percentages calculated live, recorded on hidden sheet that you can view.
  • YouTube help videos linked on each student sheet for convenience ( Khan Academy - solving for side, and Brian McLogan - solving for angle),
  • Option to auto-colour sections of the mosaic, if you are a student-or-two short of the class size, or you've got some non-engaging-home-learners :( , you can still reward the rest of the class with a completed mosaic.
  • The digital mosaics are designed for use on a computer or tablet (not a phone). Images can be viewed larger by clicking on each question's hyperlink.

PAPER VERSION DETAILS:

  • Great colouring fun for older kids! They still love it. Physically colouring adds to the magic when it all comes together.
  • Students solve their set of 12 problems, then colour-by-answer their section of the mosaic.
  • Each student gets a different problem set, so no copying :)
  • Randomized list of answers at the bottom of each students' sheet, allowing for self-assessment and catching mistakes before colouring.
  • Master Answer Key for the full class set.
  • Teaching Tips for smooth implementation of this task with your students.

You can encourage students to talk to each other, since they all have different problems. The finished product will great on your wall! It's a terrific conversation piece on parent night too.

To check out more of my paper math mosaics, check out my Math Mosaic directory, sorted by topic.

All my “Colouring by…” paper worksheets use standard pencil-crayon colours found in the Crayola 24 pack. For best results, use the exact colour name match (and encourage quality colouring!). Perhaps a class set of pencil crayons would be a fun math department investment!

Feedback, suggestions, and frontline stories are much appreciated!!

Thanks for checking this out!

My students loved this activity. Instructions were very clear, and problems were appropriate for their level. Students really enjoyed seeing the picture come together as each student turned in their piece of the puzzle. Thank you!

Students enjoyed the activity but were less impressed by the final picture. Maybe more celebrities or cartoon images we all know and love!

What an amazing activity. It took us a long time to get through it while on distance learning, but it was worth it.

I am currently using this for my summer school math class. It worked beautifully. I have used the paper version in my classes before, but I prefer this method.

Thanks for the feedback! I plan to make more digital mosaics. I like how immediate they are for practice problem feedback and assessment.
