Description

With this virtual lab activity your students can explore the compound light microscope right from their own homes.  Originally designed to cope with a “hybrid” learning environment, this lab is great for sub plans, absent students, or to be used for home teaching. This product is a lab I have designed around an existing virtual microscope simulation.  The simulation DOES NOT require flash player to run (a plus!) and can be accessed at the following link:

Virtual Microscope Laboratory

Students will begin the lab by familiarizing themselves with the parts of the microscope and their functions by exploring the resource guide, and will then practice using the microscope to observe several different slides including the Letter “e”, plant cells, and a spider leg.  Students are able to manipulate both the fine and coarse adjustment knobs, adjust the diaphragm, and manipulate the specimen around the field of view.

The lab concludes with a variety of quiz questions built into the simulation that assess student comprehension of the care and usage of the microscope, calculating total magnification, and microscope terminology.  One important thing missing from this simulation is the preparation of a wet mount slide, an essential skill in any biology classroom.  In order to address that small issue, I have included a link to a YouTube clip demonstrating the creation of a wet mount slide that students must watch in order to answer the concluding questions of the lab activity.

Distance Learning

The lab activity was created specifically for Distance Learning and was formatted using Google Docs.  This lab can be easily shared with students through Google Classroom or the use of a Google Drive.  Students can type directly on the lab and submit it to you virtually!

Included in the Google Drive Folder (2 Files):

1-Virtual Microscope Lab Document

2-Virtual Microscope Lab Answer Key

I have one group of students that can't do labs due to the class size, the available resources, and their overall lack of maturity. This was a perfect alternative option for that class. They were still able to get microscope exposure without doing a hands-on activity using the real microscopes. Thanks for this!
