Description
This completely digital product includes a PowerPoint presentation, accompanying illustrated student guided notes, AND a review worksheet, and will provide students with a thorough introduction to the Metric System and the Microscope! This product is extremely useful for an introductory unit in any biology or life science classroom. This 33-slide PowerPoint includes the following topics (in this order):
1. The Metric System: Units of Measurement, Comparison to Standard System
2. The Microscope: Parts/Functions of the Compound Light Microscope, Magnifying Power, Resolution, Field of View, Dissection Microscope, Electron Microscope
3. Microscope Measurements: Millimeter to Micrometer Conversions, Estimating Cell Size, Calculating High Power Field of View Diameter
4. Interactive Practice Problems
These notes are highly interactive! Students will fill in the blanks and label a full diagram of the compound light microscope as the content is presented. Students will also complete several practice problems on millimeter to micrometer conversions, estimating cell size using the diameter of the field of view, and calculating the diameter of the high power field of view. Helpful images and diagrams from the PowerPoint are also embedded within the guided notes to assist student understanding. Included in the PowerPoint are also links to several YouTube videos I have found helpful in teaching this material, which are of course optional! The level of detail is appropriate for a middle school biology or high school general biology course, but perhaps not sophisticated enough for an Advanced Placement course.
The review worksheet pairs directly with the PowerPoint, and can be used as a homework assignment, or even a quiz!
DISTANCE LEARNING:
This product is completely digital and can be easily emailed to students or posted to an online classroom page. As the notes are a Word document, students can type directly on the document if they are unable to print. If using Google Classroom, you are provided with a link to a Google Docs version of the guided notes AND the review worksheet, and the PowerPoint can be opened easily with Google Slides.
