Description

Looking for a new and interactive way to teach about the cell organelles? Take a ride on the "Cell Carousel!" This completely digital product includes both a PowerPoint presentation, accompanying illustrated student guided notes, and a review worksheet, and will provide students with a thorough introduction to The Cell Theory and Cell Organelles. The content can be presented in the traditional PowerPoint format, or follow the instructions provided to set up your own cell organelle "gallery walk" in your classroom!

Over the years I have found that "lecturing" on the cell organelles while my students take notes can often be boring and tedious. My solution was to create visually appealing slides that can be printed and hung around the perimeter of my classroom. Students simply stroll throughout the room with their guided notes, and take notes on each organelle as it's encountered. As an added layer of mystery, in addition to taking notes on the function of each organelle, students are also asked to guess which life process each organelle carries out for the cell and record it in their notes. This is an excellent way for students to understand the connection between each organelle in a single-celled organism and a corresponding organ system in multicellular organisms, which is a fundamental theme in biology.

Included with this product is a four-page implementation guide, complete with lecture notes and instructions for the "Cell Carousel." This product is extremely useful for an introductory unit in any biology or life science classroom. This 40-slide PowerPoint includes the following topics (in this order):

1. The History of the Cell: Invention of the Microscope, Leeuwenhoek, Hooke

2. The Cell Theory: Theory and Exceptions

3. Types of Cells: Prokaryote v. Eukaryote

4. Cell Organelles: Cell Membrane, Nucleus, Cytoplasm, Ribosome, Nucleolus, Mitochondria, Endoplasmic Reticulum (rough and smooth), Golgi Body, Lysosome, Vacuole, Centrioles, Cell Wall, Chloroplasts

5. Plant v. Animal Cell Comparison

These notes are highly interactive! Students will fill in the blanks and answer questions as the content is presented. Helpful images and diagrams from the PowerPoint are also embedded within the guided notes to assist student understanding.  Included in the PowerPoint are also links to several YouTube videos I have found helpful in teaching this material, which are of course optional! The level of detail is appropriate for a middle school biology or high school general biology course, but perhaps not sophisticated enough for an Advanced Placement course.

The review worksheet pairs directly with the PowerPoint, and can be used as a homework assignment, or even a quiz!

DISTANCE LEARNING:

This product is completely digital and can be easily emailed to students or posted to an online classroom page. As the notes are a Word document, students can type directly on the document if they are unable to print. If using Google Classroom, you are provided with a link to a Google Docs version of the guided notes AND the review worksheet, and the PowerPoint can be opened easily with Google Slides.

These notes are super similar to the guided notes I do and this was one of the topics that I just didn't like my notes for. I wanted to redo them, but had very little time to do so. The accompanying review sheet is also great! Definitely plan to buy some more on the few other topics I need tweaked.

How you don't have a million reviews for this I have no idea! I bought this and couldn't be more pleased with our first week of distant learning. The notes are SO user friendly. The PPT is clean and easy to follow and the embedded videos are a total plus. THANK YOU!!!

Develop and use a model to describe the function of a cell as a whole and ways the parts of cells contribute to the function. Emphasis is on the cell functioning as a whole system and the primary role of identified parts of the cell, specifically the nucleus, chloroplasts, mitochondria, cell membrane, and cell wall. Assessment of organelle structure/function relationships is limited to the cell wall and cell membrane. Assessment of the function of the other organelles is limited to their relationship to the whole cell. Assessment does not include the biochemical function of cells or cell parts.
