Description
This completely digital product includes a PowerPoint presentation, accompanying illustrated student guided notes, and a Review Worksheet, and will provide students with a thorough introduction to the Scientific Method and Graphing! This product is extremely useful for an introductory unit in any biology or life science classroom. This 31-slide PowerPoint includes the following topics (in this order):
1. The Nature of Science: Observations v. Inferences
2. The Scientific Method: Purpose, Research, Hypothesis, Experimentation, Analysis, Conclusions
3. Experimental Design: Control Group v. Experimental Group, Independent v. Dependent Variable, Control Factors, Validity
4. Scientific Theories: Comparison to laws, TedEd Video clip with questions
5. Graphing Skills: Basic Rules/Guidelines, Simple trick to numbering each axis, comprehensive step-by-step practice graph
These notes are highly interactive! Students will fill in the blanks and answer questions as the content is presented, including designing an experiment to test the effect of fertilizer on tomato plants. Students will also practice creating full-page line graph, including labeling and numbering each axis and plotting and connecting points. Helpful images and diagrams from the PowerPoint are also embedded within the guided notes to assist student understanding. Included in the PowerPoint are also links to several YouTube videos I have found helpful in teaching this material, which are of course optional! The level of detail is appropriate for a middle school biology or high school general biology course, but perhaps not sophisticated enough for an Advanced Placement course.
The review worksheet pairs directly with the PowerPoint, and can be used as a homework assignment, or even a quiz!
DISTANCE LEARNING:
This product is completely digital and can be easily emailed to students or posted to an online classroom page. As the notes are a Word document, students can type directly on the document if they are unable to print. If using Google Classroom, you are provided with a link to a Google Docs version of the guided notes AND the review worksheet, and the PowerPoint can be opened easily with Google Slides.
