Description
4th grade math! Now including digital version and links to Google Slides versions of the project! Project Based Learning! Real-world math application project! Whole number multiplication and division, fraction addition and subtraction, measurement conversion!
This project was designed to provide varying levels of challenge for fourth grade students. It is great for students to work on as an independent early finisher activity, during math centers, during small group instruction or as a distance learning project! It reinforces multiplication and division of whole numbers, measurement conversion, angle measurements/additive angles, multiplication and addition and subtraction of fractions, decimal comparison and multiplicative compare. It extends into fifth grade standards with some more challenging whole number multiplication and division as well.
It is perfect for on grade-level fourth grade students, advanced fourth grade students as well as fifth grade students who need to review. It is aligned to standards. 4.NBT.B.4, 4.NBT.B.5, 4.NBT.B.6, 4.MD.A.2, 4.MD.C.7, 4.NF.B.3, 4.NF.B.4, 4.NF.C.7, 4.OA.A.3, 5.NBT.B.5, 5.NBT.B.6 & 5.NBT.B.7. This is a fun and engaging project where students get to “go to the ballgame” and learn about the baseball players. They help solve problems related to information on the players’ baseball cards. They even get a chance to stop by the concession stand! Students will love this fun math project! It includes real baseball-related math problems throughout and even includes some fun facts!
The entire project is differentiated into two versions: Team Blue Rays and Team Red Pirates. Students can work through the project solving both versions as they go, or they can just do one level—whichever level best meets their needs. Below is a description of each version.
- Team Blue Rays: Whole number multiplication up to two-digit by two-digit factors and division of whole numbers up to four-digit by one-digit numbers. Fraction addition and subtraction with like denominators. Fraction multiplication with basic denominators. One-step contextual missing angle measurement problems. Single step measurement conversions.
- Team Red Pirates: Whole number multiplication and division with numbers up to three-digit by two-digit multiplication and four-digit by two-digit division. Fraction and mixed number addition and subtraction with like-denominators. Multi-step measurement conversion and missing angle problems.
There are 2 extensions included in this project as well. Both levels of the project provide a grade-level appropriate challenge, but these extensions really take it to the next level of real-world application! The extensions include both fourth and fifth grade concepts including
- Stay Hydrated: measurement conversion & whole number multiplication/division
- Concession Stand: multiplicative compare, comparing decimals and adding decimals to hundredths
The project includes 19 pages of rigorous, real-world math application problems! A really fun project to get your students engaged in applying the skills they’ve learned in fourth grade math and to help prepare them for fifth grade math! I recommend having students complete the first part of the project and then guide students to choosing an extension that is at an appropriate level for them!
The project opens as a ZIP file and includes a printable PDF version of each level (with answer key) and a digital version of each level and links to Google Slides Versions of the project!
