Distance Learning: Probability Digital Card Sort Activity (Common Core Aligned)

This drag-and-drop card sort activity created using Google™ Slides involves matching probability statements to equivalent simplified forms. There are 16 probability statements that simplify to one of four possible probabilities. This no-prep activity is perfect for distance learning, independent work, graded assessments, or practice. This resource includes an answer key and an option for differentiation. This activity is easy to share with your students via email, secure course website, or Google™ Classroom.

This product includes a PDF with:

1) Link to the activity

2) Detailed instructions on how to access the activity

4) Answer key

Objectives:

• Practice describing events as subsets of a sample space.

• Practice probability rules for independent events.

• Practice using conditional probability.

• Practice using probability rules to compute probabilities of compound events

• Practice using probability rules to simplify probability statements.

Common Core Standards:

HSS.CP.A.1: Describe events as subsets of a sample space (the set of outcomes)
HSS.CP.A.2: Understand that two events A and B are independent if the probability of A and B occurring together is the product of their probabilities
HSS.CP.A.3: Understand conditional probability of A given B as P(A and B)/P(B)
HSS.CP.A.5: Recognize and explain the concepts of conditional probability and independence in everyday language and situations.
HSS.CP.B.6: Find the conditional probability of A given B as the fraction of B’s outcomes that also belong to A.
HSS.CP.B.7: Apply the addition rule P(A or B) = P(A) + P(B) – P(A and B) and interpret the answer.
HSS.CP.B.8: Apply the general multiplication rule P(A and B) = P(A)P(B|A) = P(B)P(A|B) and interpret the answer

Describe events as subsets of a sample space (the set of outcomes) using characteristics (or categories) of the outcomes, or as unions, intersections, or complements of other events (“or,” “and,” “not”).
Understand that two events 𝘈 and 𝘉 are independent if the probability of 𝘈 and 𝘉 occurring together is the product of their probabilities, and use this characterization to determine if they are independent.
Understand the conditional probability of 𝘈 given 𝘉 as 𝘗(𝘈 and 𝘉)/𝘗(𝘉), and interpret independence of 𝘈 and 𝘉 as saying that the conditional probability of 𝘈 given 𝘉 is the same as the probability of 𝘈, and the conditional probability of 𝘉 given 𝘈 is the same as the probability of 𝘉.
