Description

Dividing whole numbers and unit fractions is the focus of these engaging math wheel notes! Use these math wheels to introduce or review dividing unit fractions by whole numbers and whole numbers by unit fractions.

  • Students take notes, use color to help with memory, and complete practice problems found around the wheel.

What is a math wheel? It's a type of graphic organizer where students can:

  • Take notes inside the math wheel
  • Use color, drawing, and doodling to help create memory triggers
  • Complete practice problems in the pattern around the wheel, and
  • Color the background pattern

Students can keep these graphic organizers in their interactive notebooks all year as a personal anchor chart or reference sheet. The wheels are excellent for reviewing concepts as part of your test prep!

  • You can even enlarge the math wheels and use them as classroom posters or anchor charts!

This dividing unit fractions resource includes:

1) 2 different options of student math wheels, with different methods:

  • 1st wheel outlines the steps of multiplying by the reciprocal
  • 2nd wheel outlines how to divide fractions by using common denominators
  • I teach both methods, so students know that both ways exist and so they can become proficient using both

THREE versions of each option

  • ‘Open’ for students to write notes (this version is most flexible, space-wise. There aren’t very many suggested notes to write, but you can add more if you’d like.
  • ‘Fill-in’ notes, to help control student use of space: there are also fraction bars on the page to help guide use of space
  • Pre-filled notes; answers to examples and practice problems are NOT on this version

⭐️Each wheel version comes with a patterned background and with no pattern in the background.

2) Teacher keys/wheels with completed notes and examples

3) Colored samples of wheels

4) PowerPoint file with two editable templates ~ you can add text to make your own math wheels, if you’d like (for classroom use only - not commercial use).

Features of this easy-to-use resource:

  • Notes and examples in each section (There are two examples included in each step/section.)
  • Guided or independent practice: 8 problems around the circle, for students to practice dividing fractions and mixed numbers.
  • Coloring/doodling opportunity: students can color the background pattern, as well as the headings and doodle arrows

Each section of the dividing unit fractions notes wheel outlines a step of the fraction division process:

Multiplying by Reciprocal wheel:

1) Convert to improper fraction

2) Rewrite as multiplication

3) Multiply numerators; multiply denominators

4) Use models ~ you might decide to begin with this section, to help develop the concept of fraction division, before moving to the process in the other 3 sections

Using Common Denominators wheel:

1) Convert to improper fraction

2) Find common denominators

3) 1st numerator on top; 2nd numerator on bottom

4) Use models

What teachers are saying about this resource:

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ “My students loved this, super helpful resource.”

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ “A great hands-on activity to enforce these difficult concepts.”

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ “Great resource for division! Students use it as a reference for solving division fraction tasks.”

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 5th Grade Math Wheels Bundle: "Worth every penny! My students refer to math wheels often to help them remember the concepts. We use them as success criteria. I often teach my lessons using math wheels. A great resource for my students."
