Description

Division Word Problems contains 6 printable pages, each with 4 word problems. The printables setup the situation for the problem, and then students write a problem that may be solved using the given information. This method helps students to really think about the situation involved in each problem. These printables are geared toward division problems; however, students may write other types of questions involving the giving information. Because each question has multiple correct answers; these word problem printables naturally are differentiated. Students are able to write question on their level. It is amazing what they come up with!

Lets students share their problems. They will find most of them are worded differently but mean the same thing. My class had the best math discussion using this resource. For example, my students were writing a question for this word problem “The bakery makes 170 donuts every morning. They pack them in boxes that hold 6 donuts each.” Most students wrote something like: How many boxes will they need to hold the 170 donuts? However, one student wrote: How many full boxes will the bakery have? This led to a fantastic discussion about what to do with the remainders.

The printables provide a large space for students to write their own questions to each word problem. Some students may want to write a matching equation in that space. Other students may want to also solve their question. I suggested this to my early finishers when using this resource whole group.

Teaching Tip: I teach my students to comprehend the situation of the word problem to help them discriminate between multiplication and division word problems. They learn division word problems will tell you how many in all, while multiplication word problems will need you to find how many in all.
