Description
⭐ Earth Day Addition Within 20 activities for first grade give students engaging, low-prep opportunities to practice addition through partner games and meaningful problem solving. Students work together in math centers or small groups to solve missing-addend equations and create and solve word problems. Students extend this thinking to numbers within 120 through a bonus activity that supports representing numbers to 120, giving them an additional way to apply what they know about numbers and equations. These activities make math engaging for students while giving teachers flexible, partner-friendly tasks that are easy to manage and reuse.
✨ Why it matters
An important part of developing number sense is understanding that numbers can be composed and decomposed in different ways. Students also need intentional experiences with the meaning of the equal sign so they see equations as balanced relationships, not simply signals that “the answer comes next.”
✨ How it helps
Partner-based tasks encourage students to explain their thinking as they solve addition problems within 20. As students talk through their strategies, teachers gain insight into how students reason about equations, missing addends, and number relationships.
✨ Ways to use
- Use in math centers for partner practice and discussion
- Introduce or reinforce concepts during small-group or targeted instruction
- Listen in and ask questions to support math talk and informal assessment
- Reuse throughout the year for purposeful, low-prep practice
✨ What’s included
- Capture 4 partner game for addition within 20 with missing addends, highlighting the meaning of the equal sign (e.g., 15 = 6 + □ + 2 + 4)
- Five addition word problems within 20 for students to write and solve (answer key included)
- Student directions for You Write the Story, a companion task using the Capture 4 cards
- Bonus printables for representing numbers to 120 using multiple representations
This Earth Day–themed resource fits seamlessly into math centers and small-group instruction while supporting strong number sense through purposeful partner work.
