Engineering Design Process made easy for teachers:

Studying the Engineering Design Process is engaging for students and easy for teachers when using this unit. Students will learn about the Engineering Design Process through informational text and practical activity. Students will then put the Engineering Design Process to into action.

The unit begins with an engaging introductory activity studying the invention and innovation of the pencil. Students are surprised to learn that something as simple as a pencil is technology and has be innovated through the years.

Students will read informational text and study important vocabulary. They will be led through a Engineering Design Process activity and create a jump rope. They will test and redesign their jump rope.

Students will then innovate a present technology using the Engineering Design Process. They will create and test a protype before redesigning their technology.

An optional final presentation wraps up the unit.

Follow up questions are included to increase rigor and help students make connections.

This unit aligns with Science Standards 3-5-ETS-1, 3-5-ETS-2, 3-5-ETS-3.
