What are other teachers saying about this resource?
⭐⭐⭐⭐"Good resource for measurement unit."
⭐⭐⭐⭐"Great practice activities!"
☝ This standards-based unit includes measuring different objects using non-standard units (linking cubes, paperclips, etc.). The practice includes both using units to measure and writing/reasoning about what we do when we measure. Your young mathematicians will begin to measure using non-standard units and the relative size of things. This is how we encourage higher-order thinking in our young students.
✨ Mega Math Practice 1.MD.2 gives your students a lot of practice understanding the concept of measuring objects using non-standard units.
✨ Mega Math Practice can be used as independent practice for skills already taught, homework, or as a class starter. These pages are NOT meant to be used until students need practice with skills that they have already been taught. They should also not take the place of using actual manipulatives. The use of manipulatives is also helpful WHILE using these practice pages. Students also need many opportunities to work with the measurement of length in a variety of situations.
☝ This unit is aligned with the First Grade Common Core Math Standard 1.MD.2:
➤ Express the length of an object as a whole number of length units, by
laying multiple copies of a shorter object (the length unit) end to end; understand that the length measurement of an object is the number of same-size length units that span it with no gaps or overlaps. Limit to contexts where the object being measured is spanned by a whole number of length units with no gaps or overlaps.
☝ This unit includes practice with measuring length from the first-grade standards. I use these pages during our “written math practice” rotation during math workshop/guided math time. These pages can also be used for early finishers or homework during the time that you work with individuals and small groups. There are more MEGA MATH PRACTICE units to come aligned with the Common Core State Standards.
First Grade Measurement and Data Activities focuses on the first grade standard:
⭐Measurement and Data 1.MD.2:
Express the length of an object as a whole number of length units, by laying multiple copies of a shorter object (the length unit) end to end; understand that the length measurement of an object is the number of same-size length units that span it with no gaps or overlaps. Limit to contexts where the object being measured is spanned by a whole number of length units with no gaps or overlaps.
