Description

Using formative assessment is the most powerful way to move your students forward in their learning. Using visual and written methods, this formative assessment set will help you and your students enjoy assessment as a growth mindset instead of dreading it!

Formative assessment is a way of assessing students AS they learn in order to help them be aware and in control of their own learning and to help you, as the teacher, to plan lessons based on this on-going assessment. No 2 students learn or perform exactly alike, so formative assessment is the way to address all your students' needs.

In this resource, you will find information on the difference between formative and summative assessment, the elements and purpose of effective formative assessment, as well as a description and matching printable (where necessary) of formative assessment ideas in the classroom.

Ideas and strategies include:

★Verbal or Visual:

→Thumbs Up!

→Demonstration Station

→Traffic Lights

→Peer to Peer Talk

★Written:

→Whiteboard Write

→Exit Slips (3 varieties)

→Double Entry Journal

→Graffiti Wall

→ABC

→Drawing

→Observation

→Place Mats

→Quick Write

→3 Facts and a Fib

→Examples and Non-Examples

→Self Assessment Using Exemplars

These tools can be used in any curricular area and are simple enough to use them tomorrow! There are full page and half page varieties to save paper and some are of a collaborative nature.

Teachers know that high stakes testing does not help students learn. These formative assessment tools do. Using them throughout the year and a summative assessment at the end of the unit shows progress over time. Just what every teacher needs to help students learn and be part of facilitating that process.
