A Piece of Pie Fraction Story Problems is perfect for any time of year when your students need some fraction story problem review! It includes fraction story problems within the context of a bakery making and selling pies which helps give your students a meaningful context for problem solving! It includes basic fraction concepts such as partitioning a whole and identifying and labeling fractional parts of a whole, as well as equivalent fractions, addition and subtraction of fractions and mixed numbers, multiplication of fractions and fraction division. A perfect activity to have some fun on Pi Day!
This resource can be used for small group instruction, math centers, independent practice and more! This is great for fourth and fifth grade math classes with students who need support with the foundational fraction skills, as well as those who need an enrichment challenge! It can also be used for third grade classes with students who are ready for more of a challenge in the higher levels. It covers third, fourth and fifth grade standards for fractions.
Each level includes 10 rigorous fraction story problems (4 pages of problems). A total of 30 rigorous fraction story problems included!
- Level 1: Fraction Foundations: understanding fractions and partitioning wholes into equal-sized parts. Fraction models and labeling fractional parts. Fraction comparisons with fractions with the same numerator or same denominator. Generating simple equivalent fractions and comparing fractions to benchmarks such as Β½. Aligned to standards 3.NF.A.1, 3.NF.A.3
- Level 2: Operations with Fractions & Equivalencies: Addition and subtraction of fractions with like denominators. Generating and recognizing equivalent fractions. Comparing fractions. Understanding one whole as a sum of unit fractions. Decomposing fractions. Comparing fractions with different numerators and denominators. Multiplication of fractions and whole numbers. Aligned to standards: 4.NF.A.1, 4.NF.A.2, 4.NF.A.3, 4.NF.B.4
- Level 3: Multiplication and Division of Fractions: Addition and subtraction of fractions and mixed numbers. Interpreting fractions as division. Multiplication of fractions by fractions and fractions by whole numbers. Dividing fractions by whole numbers and whole numbers by fractions. Aligned to standards: 5.NF.A.1, 5.NF.A.2, 5.NF.B.3, 5.NF.B.4, 5.NF.B.6, 5.NF.B.7
