Description

Middle school math students will practice working with integers positive and negative whole numbers using this interactive activity. Students will identify important keywords, order integers on a number line, and represent real life situations using positive and negative integers.

This is a perfect activity to check for understanding of ratio tables during distance learning and students using Google Classroom™. You can share this activity with your students through Google Classroom™ or Google Drive, which they can type directly onto, and then share back with you! This activity is aligned with the 6th grade Math Common Core Standards.

This activity includes 5 slides. The first slide students click and drag 12 numbers and identify if it is an integer or is not an integer. The second slide students will sort positive and negative keywords such as: debt, profit, above sea level, below sea level, decrease, increase, etc. The third slide students will represent real-world scenarios as positive and negative integers, such as, "The temperature was 2 degrees below zero". The fourth slide, slides will fill in the missing negative integers on 2 different number lines. Finally, the fifth slide students will order positive and negative integers from least to greatest. (4 problems)

Understand that positive and negative numbers are used together to describe quantities having opposite directions or values (e.g., temperature above/below zero, elevation above/below sea level, credits/debits, positive/negative electric charge); use positive and negative numbers to represent quantities in real-world contexts, explaining the meaning of 0 in each situation.
Understand a rational number as a point on the number line. Extend number line diagrams and coordinate axes familiar from previous grades to represent points on the line and in the plane with negative number coordinates.
Recognize opposite signs of numbers as indicating locations on opposite sides of 0 on the number line; recognize that the opposite of the opposite of a number is the number itself, e.g., -(-3) = 3, and that 0 is its own opposite.
