Printable and digital lesson/project for 4.MD.B2 and 5.MD.B2: (Grades 4, 5 ,6) Get students excited about analyzing data! Give them a reason to WANT to calculate an average and add and subtract fractions on a line plot! This Fortnite mini unit has students determining the most FULL LIVES (wholes) they can make from fractional parts. They can also determine the average and practice creating, analyzing and performing operations with fraction numbers on a variety of line plots.

This mini-unit also has a task analyzing data from mini bags of m&ms. If you like, you can create your own data using snack size m&m's. It works without them too.

  • Page 2 Digital Display/ Printable Sheet: SW create a line plot depicting the amounts of remaining health (data). Whole group lesson… or students can try independently before coming together to share.
  • Page 3 Display/ Printable Worksheet: SW create a new line plot of data & use the organized data to determine the number of FULL LIVES they can make from the remaining health. (how many whole from these fractional parts; ADDING FRACTIONS)
  • Page 4 Printable assessment.
  • Page 5 (5th / 6th grade or level up option) SW predict and determine the average or typical amount of health left for players in this game.
  • Page 6 Thinking Questions: Analyzing the shape of data.. trends and what they mean.

Make a line plot to display a data set of measurements in fractions of a unit (1/2, 1/4, 1/8). Solve problems involving addition and subtraction of fractions by using information presented in line plots. For example, from a line plot find and interpret the difference in length between the longest and shortest specimens in an insect collection.
Make a line plot to display a data set of measurements in fractions of a unit (1/2, 1/4, 1/8). Use operations on fractions for this grade to solve problems involving information presented in line plots. For example, given different measurements of liquid in identical beakers, find the amount of liquid each beaker would contain if the total amount in all the beakers were redistributed equally.
Display numerical data in plots on a number line, including dot plots, histograms, and box plots.
