These cards are perfect for helping your students stay on topic independently after they have finished their assigned work-- making it easier for you to concentrate on helping students that need extra support!
This Early Finisher set will get your students thinking about and applying their understanding of multiplication while you work with the students that need help from you! Just print out the cards, cut, and photocopy the recording sheets! And, voila! You’ve got the makings of a task-driven, topic-focussed classroom! Low-prep, yet super-effective!

These Early Finisher Cards are appropriate for students in Grade 3.
Here’s what’s included:
- 26 different early finisher cards—the first 20 cards (letters A-T) are a mix of questions and quick creative tasks; the last 6 cards (letters U-Z) are more extensive tasks

How it works:
Students choose a card. They must either answer the question or create what is being asked on their recording sheet. If it’s a card with a letter from A-T, they can use the small recording sheet or their Math notebooks to complete the task.
If it’s a card from U-Z and it involves creating a word problem, quiz, word search, math story, students can do so on one of the designated sheets provided.
Tip: You can put the guide sheets for cards U to Z up on your Math wall or Early Finisher corner for students to refer to when completing tasks from cards U to Z. This way, they can look at the guidelines independently.
These cards have a variety of uses:
- Early Finisher work and extension activities: When students are done with their Math tasks, they can pick out a card from an “I’m Done” jar or bag and answer the questions on their recording sheets or Math journals.
- Math Centres and small-group instruction: Have students answer the questions or complete the tasks as a centre activity. Alternatively, you can use a question as a prompt during small-group instruction.
- Scavenger hunts in the classroom: students can answer as many questions as they can, at their own pace.
- 4 Corners-- i.e., you can place 4 different questions at each corner of the classroom, and students can choose which questions to answer.
- Lesson Activation and Exploration: show one card on the board at the start of a lesson to get students activating their thinking and talking.
- Think-pair-share during a lesson: display a card on the board and have the students think, talk about their thinking and answers in pairs, and then share with the class.
- Exit tickets: photocopy a class set or display the question or task on the board and have students answer the questions in their notebooks to show their thinking and application.

Grade 3:

Interpret products of whole numbers, e.g., interpret 5 × 7 as the total number of objects in 5 groups of 7 objects each. For example, describe a context in which a total number of objects can be expressed as 5 × 7.
CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.3.OA.A.3
Use multiplication and division within 100 to solve word problems in situations involving equal groups, arrays, and measurement quantities, e.g., by using drawings and equations with a symbol for the unknown number to represent the problem.

Determine the unknown whole number in a multiplication or division equation relating three whole numbers.

IMPORTANT:
These cards are printable. In order to display these on your Smart Board or projector, simply open up the PDF and choose which card you would like to show your class.
For the Math Anchor Chart piece, students can just use a blank piece of paper so that they can design and decorate it with the borders and text features they wish. There is no recording sheet for it.
The tasks on the last six cards (U-Z) involve a bit more time, so they can be especially helpful for students who tend to finish earlier.
If you purchase another set of Early Finisher cards, you can use the same guide sheets and worksheets for cards U-Z. This way, you don’t have to print out a different set of sheets for every new topic.
