Description
Scavenger hunt activities are great ways for students to have a great time and practice critical math skills. The best part is that they are self-checking! Students that make a mistake will quickly realize that there is a problem when they either return to the original card far sooner than they should or are unable to find their answer as they search the cards. This also encourages error analysis and the very important skill of double checking answers!
This Scavenger Quest allows students to practice multiplying mixed numbers with whole numbers and fractions and to recognize key words in fraction word problems. Real world situations allow students to relate mathematical skills with common real-life and cross-curricular activities! These 12 story problems will have your students up, thinking, and moving in no time!
Scavenger Quests require VERY LITTLE prep. Simply print off an answer sheet (double sided with LOTS of room for kiddos to work out their math problems!!) for each student and one set of the cards (on paper or cardstock for more durability). Cut the cards out and laminate if you wish so they last longer. Hang them up around the room and in the hallway if you like – kids get a kick out of escaping the classroom.
Students can start at any card. Read and answer the question, working out the problem and writing the answer in the corner of the first box on the answer sheet. Then search the room for the card containing that answer in the small corner circle. This is your next card. Read the new question, answer it, and record the answer in the next box on the answer sheet making sure to follow the arrows. The answer for the last card in the series will take you back to the card where you started. If you return to the first card before then, a mistake was made somewhere along the way.

Great Practice Activity
Met expectations
Great value
Standards-aligned
My kids loved doing the scavenger quest with these; it was great review before our test.
This was exactly what I was looking for to use with my students. My students were really engaged the entire time.
I use many items to create my year long curriculum and this fits my classroom perfectly.
Great practice for my students. Some of the problems required them to multiply and then subtract. Created great dialogue about what the answer to their multiplication problem actually represents in the story.
This resource provided a lot of critical thinking for my students. The only suggestion I would make is to have the answer key note which answer belongs to each card.
Great resource!
Great resource!
Love it! Worked great for keeping 6th graders engaged.

Standards

CCSS5.NF.A.1
Add and subtract fractions with unlike denominators (including mixed numbers) by replacing given fractions with equivalent fractions in such a way as to produce an equivalent sum or difference of fractions with like denominators. For example, 2/3 + 5/4 = 8/12 + 15/12 = 23/12. (In general, 𝘢/𝘣 + 𝘤/𝘥 = (𝘢𝘥 + 𝘣𝘤)/𝘣𝘥.)
CCSS5.NF.A.2
Solve word problems involving addition and subtraction of fractions referring to the same whole, including cases of unlike denominators, e.g., by using visual fraction models or equations to represent the problem. Use benchmark fractions and number sense of fractions to estimate mentally and assess the reasonableness of answers. For example, recognize an incorrect result 2/5 + 1/2 = 3/7, by observing that 3/7 < 1/2.
