Description

Digital. Printable. Engaging. And Differentiated! Numberless real world situations force learners to consider the context BEFORE just adding or multiplying the numbers! These cards were designed for third graders, hitting all grade 3 operations standards that will challenge your 4th graders too. They are basically self differentiating because when the time finally comes to solve the problems, you can allow students to choose their own numbers. The act of choosing numbers shows us another layer of their thinking.

“They just add all the numbers! It doesn’t matter what the problem says.”

-said Every Teacher. Ever.

These are a great small group intervention activity for 3rd-6th graders because we add our own numbers. Reuse the headers & recording sheets for ANY problems. Numberless cards can be reused with different numbers. Students can choose their own or teachers can provide them.

PET THEMED PACK INCLUDES:

First Activity

  • Mini Lesson (Choose Google Slides or PDF)
  • 24 numberless problems to sort
  • 5 sorting headers

Second Activity

  • 24 Follow Up cards framed out with blanks for students to use their own values
  • 2 different recording sheets (or use Google Slides)

PLUS

  • QR Code for 100 Problem Solving Photo Story Starters

This is NOT a one and done task. You can use one of the cards each morning as a warm up. Challenge students to make a plan before they get the numbers they need. Change up the numbers to suit your purposes.

Reuse the blank cards as a center at least 2 or 3 times and ask them to challenge themselves with the numbers. Use calculators occasionally and focus on reasoning.

Used in my guided math groups. Students liked that the problems were about pets.

Interpret products of whole numbers, e.g., interpret 5 × 7 as the total number of objects in 5 groups of 7 objects each. For example, describe a context in which a total number of objects can be expressed as 5 × 7.
Interpret whole-number quotients of whole numbers, e.g., interpret 56 ÷ 8 as the number of objects in each share when 56 objects are partitioned equally into 8 shares, or as a number of shares when 56 objects are partitioned into equal shares of 8 objects each. For example, describe a context in which a number of shares or a number of groups can be expressed as 56 ÷ 8.
Use multiplication and division within 100 to solve word problems in situations involving equal groups, arrays, and measurement quantities, e.g., by using drawings and equations with a symbol for the unknown number to represent the problem.
