Description

Are you looking for engaging practice for students to learn and practice polygons? Then have your students practice with polygons on this digital geometry notebook for Google Slides®. Students apply what they learn about the triangle, quadrilateral, pentagon, hexagon, octagon, and decagon to complete tasks. Teachers can use this Google Slides® resource to complement their geometry lessons.

The interactive digital notebook is divided into three sections: Introduction to Polygons, Explore Polygons and Practice with Polygons. Each section has many tasks and a newly added open-ended math routine to engage students with the geometry content.

HOW IT WORKS

  • Assign the Google Slides® file to students via email or Google Classroom®
  • Students review the two TECH TIP slides explaining how to use the Google Slides® Draw Tools for lines and shapes.
  • Students read the INSTRUCTIONS FOR USE, and the slide SPEAKER NOTES that support understanding of how to complete each task.
  • The students interact on the slides with the tasks by entering text or using the Google Slides®' draw tools.
  • Students watch an embedded VIDEO that reinforces and explains the attributes of the different polygons. Students have complete control over the video, allowing them to pause, rewind, and watch it as many times as needed.
  • On the video slide, additional links to another video and website provide more support and reinforcement for the content if needed.
  • At the beginning of each section, students engage in one of the following open-ended math routines that have a low floor-high ceiling design
    • Notice and Wonder
    • Would You Rather
    • Which One Doesn't Belong

  • In the section Introduction to Polygons, students work on slides to
    • learn the attributes of polygons
    • identify polygons
    • learn vocabulary pertinent to polygons

  • In the section Explore Polygons, students work on slides to
    • Identify the attributes of each of the following polygons (one slide for each)
      • triangle, quadrilateral, pentagon, hexagon, octagon, and decagon

  • In the section Practice with Polygons, students work on slides to
    • practice with polygon prefixes
    • decide whether a shape is a polygon or not and explain why
    • answer polygon riddles
    • decide if a shape is a polygon or not
    • find polygons in an image
    • design a scene with the draw tools that incorporate polygons
    • In the last slide, students must DECIDE AND DEFEND which reasoning by 2 students they agree with and then defend the argument.

SUPPORT FOR STUDENTS

  • The INSTRUCTIONS FOR USE slide has detailed directions on working with the Interactive Digital Notebook.
  • All the slides provide instructions, while the SPEAKER NOTES section of each slide provides more detailed instructions.
  • In addition to the SPEAKER NOTES, the VIDEO SLIDE has another WEBSITE and VIDEO link to further support student understanding of polygons and their attributes. These are kid-friendly, trusted, and reliable websites and videos.
  • To view the videos, access to YouTube is necessary. However, students view the video through video.link for a kid-friendly viewing of YouTube videos (removes comments, related videos, etc.). If you do not have access to YouTube, I offer an alternate link to share with students. The alternate link hosts the video on a separate site (not YouTube).

These slides helped me introduce the concept of polygons before teaching about the attributes of quadrilaterals. It was a good review for my students, and definitely needed before going to the more difficult concept of quadrilaterals.

to see state-specific standards (only available in the US).
Understand that shapes in different categories (e.g., rhombuses, rectangles, and others) may share attributes (e.g., having four sides), and that the shared attributes can define a larger category (e.g., quadrilaterals). Recognize rhombuses, rectangles, and squares as examples of quadrilaterals, and draw examples of quadrilaterals that do not belong to any of these subcategories.
