Description

Students practice probability rules (complement, addition, multiplication) in this self-checking maze activity. Students use contextual interpretation and probability notation to solve problems on probability rules using data presented in two-way tables and Venn diagrams. Students follow a maze to the finish line by correctly answering the questions. Possible paths provide an answer bank and an opportunity for self-checking.

This fun twist on worksheets engages students by allowing them to independently play a maze game as they reinforce probability concepts. This maze activity is great for subs, independent work, early finishers, exam review, and extra practice.

Answer key included!

Objectives:

1) Practice applying the fact that two events are independent if their probability of occurring together is the product of their probabilities.

2) Practice solving for the conditional probability of A given B by applying the general multiplication rule: since P(AΒ andΒ B) = P(A | B)P(B), then P(A | B) = P(AΒ andΒ B)/P(B).

3) Practice working with and interpreting conditional probabilities.

4) Practice applying the complement rule and interpreting the answer.

5) Practice applying the general addition rule and interpreting the answer.

Common Core Standards:

HSS.CP.A.2: Understand that 2 events A and B are independent if the probability of A and B occurring together is the product of their probabilities, and use this characterization to determine if they are independent

HSS.CP.A.3: Understand conditional probability of A given B as P(A and B)/P(B) and interpret independence of A and B as saying that the conditional prob of A given B is the same as the probability of A, and the conditional probability of B given A is the same as the probability of B

HSS.CP.B.6: Find the conditional probability of A given B as the fraction of B’s outcomes that also belong to A; interpret the answer in terms of a model

HSS.CP.B.7: Apply the addition rule P(A or B) = P(A) + P(B) – P(A and B) and interpret the answer in terms of a model.
