Description
Rounding to the nearest 10 or 100 is interactive and engaging with this creative but structured math wheel note-taking format!
- Students take a few notes, use visuals and color to help with concept development and memory, and complete practice problems found around the wheel.
What is a math wheel? It's a graphic organizer where students can:
- Take notes inside the math wheel
- Use color, drawing, and doodling to help create memory triggers
- Complete practice problems in the pattern around the wheel, and
- Color the background pattern
Students can keep the math wheels in their interactive notebooks all year as a personal anchor chart/reference sheet.
- The wheels are excellent for reviewing concepts as part of your test prep or intervention.
- You can even enlarge the math wheels and use them as posters or anchor charts!
The sections of the Rounding to 10s and 100s Math Wheel include:
1) Rounding is…: includes the meaning of rounding and a brief review of place value, using a place value table that goes to thousands, so students are reminded of the place values
2) Round up: focuses on using number lines to help with identifying halfway and above; 2 examples in this section
3) Round down: focuses on using number lines to help with identifying below halfway; 2 examples in this section
4) Rounding steps: notes to outline the steps of the rounding process
- At the bottom of this section are 3 examples to try.
- The separate number line page has number lines with these examples in case students need the visual
5) Let’s round!: has four practice problems that use vertical number lines.
This easy-prep rounding to 10s and 100s resource includes:
1) FOUR versions of the student wheel
- ‘Open,’ 1st version: spaces for students to write all notes ~ gives the most flexibility to tailor the wheel to your teaching
- ‘Open,’ 2nd version: space for students to write all notes except the rounding steps – these are fill-in-the-blanks
- Fill-in notes: helps control use of space
- Pre-filled: for students who need pre-filled notes, absentees or new students. Answers to examples and practice problems are NOT on this wheel.
⭐️Each version comes with a patterned background and with no pattern in the background.
2) Teacher key with completed notes and examples
3) Colored sample of wheel
4) PowerPoint file with two editable templates ~you can add text to make your own math wheels, if you’d like (for classroom use only - not commercial use).
5) Work page with number lines (and the practice problems from around the circle) in case you want students to have number lines to refer to when they complete the practice.
Features of this easy-to-use rounding whole numbers resource:
1) Notes sections and examples
2) Guided or independent practice: 10 problems in the pattern around the circle
3) Coloring/doodling opportunity: students can color the background pattern, as well as the headings and doodle arrows, however they like.
Coloring the background, if you use the patterned versions:
- Students don’t HAVE to color at all during instructional time….coloring the background could be an ‘early finisher’ activity, homework, etc.
- Students don’t need to color every section of the background – part of their coloring pattern could be to leave sections white.
- Students could color sections with patterns instead of solids – maybe polka dots in one section and squiggly lines in another.
- This coloring part is just a chance to be creative, explore patterns, and enjoy the stress-relief coloring can provide:-)

thanks for this feedback!
update 8/27/25: I've added new versions that have no pattern in the background. This might be less overwhelming.
