STEM at-home videos can be used to support distance learning for STEM activities. Led by an engineer, the videos are intended to support elementary and middle school students through fun engineering design challenges with a real-world connection. Find the full series here.
This video supports the Plants In Space STEM Challenge. Use with one of the guides below:
Mission: Students will learn about what plants need to survive and then build a mini greenhouse. Students are then tasked to use the engineering design process to design and build a device to support their greenhouse.
Materials needed:
- Scissors
- Tape
- Sealable sandwich bag
- 2 cotton balls
- Water
- 2 seeds such as vegetable or flower seeds, dried beans (must soak at least 1 hour), or popcorn kernels
- Materials for a plant support device such as cereal boxes, paper, plastic cups, water bottles, sticks
