Description
The following resource corresponds to the Next Generation Science Standard MS-ESS1-3. The content level of this activity depends on your students and is accessible for middle school to early high school.
This is a substitute ready lesson, meaning there is limited preparation required. The activity includes a bit.ly link to a YouTube Video published by cognitoedu.org. The videos are linked below for your viewing and evaluation prior to purchase.
Video #1: GCSE Maths - Using Scales on Maps and Scale Diagrams
This video reviews how and why scientists/mathematicians use scale models. In the video the narrator will review go over different types of scale models. How to create your own scale models, and how to convert units from a scale model into real-world dimensions.
Note: Cognitoedu.org is an excellent resource for students to study/review content related to math and/or science. They provide videos similar to Crash Course. Even if you do not use this activity, I encourage you look through their platform as my students have greatly benefited from their content.
In this activity (Scale and Proportion Overview), students will begin by watching the assigned video (see above). The video will introduce students to the concept of reading, drawing, and using scale models. While watching the video, students will answer guided questions, create visual aids, and be provided opportunities to draw/annotate their learning. This document serves as an excellent resource to introduce the topic of scale and proportion or to review the concept prior to examination. At the end of the assignment there is a virtual simulation that students may explore at their own pace to see a scale model of our solar system (Wiseman Learning does not claim the rights to this simulation, nor was this simulation created by Wiseman Learning).
The assignment is independent and student driven, requiring limited preparation from the instructor. The limited preparation also makes it easy for this activity to serve as an independent substitute plan. I have personally used this assignment in the past as a drag and drop substitute plan when teaching MS-ESS1-3. To complete this activity, students will need the following...
Materials:
- Access to A Digital Device (Computer, Table, Phone)
- Access to YouTube
- Printed Document (Kinetic Energy Overview)
- Pen/Pencil
In this purchase, you will receive the student guided "Scale and Proportion Overview" document (2 Pages), as well as, a completed answer key (another 2 Pages). The assignment is in PDF format with bit.ly links for students to directly access the video content without the use of an LMS. This would also serve as an easy to access emergency substitute plan!
This assignment also pairs well with the following assignment(s) from my store:
- Space and Solar System: Scale and Proportion (Free Resource)
